"Coffee Milk" - The Official State Drink of Rhode Island

Growing up in Rhode Island there was never a shortage of coffee milk.  Despite the common perception it is not coffee with milk in it but rather a sweet coffee flavored syrup put in milk (same concept as chocolate milk).  The person who created it basically sweetened leftover coffee grounds with milk and sugar and made a syrup.  It was an instant success in Rhode Island.  While adults enjoy their hot coffee kids can drink coffee milk.  Coffee milk is not only sweet but has that rich flavor of coffee in each sip.  However, it remains mostly a Rhode Island beverage probably due to the fact no one ever leaves the state.  The creation of coffee milk (adding sweetness and milk to a coffee flavor) is a similar concept Starbucks went with when they began crafting sweet beverages instead of just plain black coffee.  Everyone in the U.S. likes the taste of something sweet and this is just that.  It is definitely a distinct taste and is nostalgic of my childhood in Rhode Island.

  1. This sounds really really good! How long has it been around and does it come in other flavors? This seems really similar to how I feel about Loganberry. A Buffalo/ Western New York original that's also very nostalgic :)
